Mara and Serengeti Ecosystem lying between Kenya and Tanzania is popularly known in the world as "The Kingdom of Wild Life in East Africa". On the Kenyan side, the government designates Masai Mara as a conservation area while on the other hand in Tanzania, Serengeti is the one refferd to by the same name. Serengeti National park is nominated as the World Heritage which occupies most of the ecosystem. Initially only wild animals could live in savannah in both areas according to the conservation policy, however, only the Masai were permitted later to live there because this was their original land.
The Masai living in vast savannah, i,e., Mara and Serengeti ecosystem are nomads and have cattle and goats. The Masai land spreads between Kenya and Tanzania, but the Masai people are permitted to go across the border without passports.
The Masai walk a lot. Even children walk about 100 kilometers everyday together with their catle and goats. The first elementary school for the Masai was established in 1950's, and many Masai children commuted by walking more than several hundred kilometers. It takes a Land Cruiser more than half day to drive from Masai Mara to Nairobi. The Masai take 2 or 3 days to cover the same distance when escorting cattle for the purpese of auctioning. In the case of children, they walk bare foot but the adults walk with sandals so called "Masai shoes" which made from old tyres.
There is an interesting episode about the sandals. The best quality of sandals are said to be made from old Bridgestone tyre and the second ones are made from Michelin, then the cheapest are made from Firestone tyres. There recycled shoes look the same but their durability depend on the type of tyre they are made from.
The other proof that the Masai walks a lot is the great difference in the sense of distance compared to us. For example if you are driving in the Mara and happen to get lost, then you meet a Masai and ask him where lodge ABC is, he will point and tell you there it is. For most of us we would imagine that the lodge is about 10 Kms away but in the case of Masai he is referring to a distance of about 100 Kms that is why he just says "here".
The appearance of walking Masai males is beautiful. They wear red clothing which has good contrast with the green of the savannah and the blue sky. Almost all of them are slender.
The Masai take milk and blood from cattle which are rich in iron. They eat cattle and goat meat as main dish and seldomly eat vegetables. We never meet fat Masai in savannah bacause they walk a lot. It is true that they have a physical reason but they also have another reason.
This is because they take soup made from acacia tree. there are many flat acacia punctuating the grassy savannah which resemble an open umbrella. The Masai make it a habit to drink soup made from the skin of acacia by boiling its roots or mixing it with milk after meals. This is a sort of digestive which is very bitter and contains sabonin which plays a major role in the reduction of cholesterol. The Masai like eating fat or marrow of meats which are delicious compared to other parts. Surprisingly the Masais cholesterol is on average 1/3 lower than the Western people living in town. Therefore the Masai have no cases whatsover of heart diseases symbolized by modern sickness of obesity.
The reason Masais maintain the healthy look is probably due to drinking soup made from acacia tree and walking with sandals made from old tyres. Knowing that to drink the tree and to walk long distances like the Masai is good for keeping healthy, we cannot act like the Masai. But we come to a conclusion that in order to maintain good health, we have to eat well balanced meals and exercise properly. After all basic is important.
When you have a chance to go to Kenya and Tanzania, I do recommemd you should walk in savannah with Masai shoes made from Bridgestone.
